Designing the Flight XIII patch gave me the chance to turn the number 13 into something positive. Instead of treating it as unlucky, I wanted it to represent progress, courage, and the willingness to keep pushing forward. The planned 13-engine landing burn gave the number a real connection to the flight, making XIII more than just the mission number. Although the booster’s landing burn did not go fully to plan and ended in a hard splashdown, Flight 13 still achieved major milestones, including Starship’s successful re-entry and soft ocean landing. To me, it showed that progress does not always have to be perfect to be worth celebrating, making 13 feel rather lucky after all.
